Desert So Green marks a striking evolution for Winged Wheel, the experimental indie supergroup whose members hail from diverse corners of the underground music scene, including Sonic Youth, Spray Paint, Tyvek, Matchess, and more. Rather than simply rehashing the lofty kosmische jams of their previous work, this third studio album stretches into terrains both unsettling and sublime, offering a compellingly immersive listening experience.

From the outset with “Canvas 11,” Winged Wheel abandons traditional song structures in favor of shifting soundscapes that draw as much from krautrock motorik rhythms as they do from ghostly ambient textures. The track gently ebbs and flows without ever building toward a predictable climax — more like a sonic journey than a song.

Across the nine tracks, moments of eerie beauty like “More Frog Poems” and “Beautiful Holy Jewel Home” balance tension with release, merging dense guitar fuzz, buried vocals, and slow-motion drumming into something that feels both intimate and otherworldly.  In contrast, songs like “Speed Table” and “I See Poseurs Every Day” give the album unexpected edges, incorporating metallic post-punk energy and warped psych-pop elements that keep the listener alert.

What makes Desert So Green remarkable is its careful interplay between experimentation and intent. The band’s collective experience shines through in compositions that feel meticulously considered even as they traverse abstract spaces. This record doesn’t just invite repeated listens — it demands them, revealing new layers and textures with each return.

Ultimately, Desert So Green stands as a testament to Winged Wheel’s creative ambition: a restless, haunting, and beautifully unpredictable album that defies easy categorization and expands the boundaries of modern experimental rock.
