Nate Amos’s Holo Boy feels like the warm, slightly rumpled chest of an old sweater: familiar threads rearranged into something quietly new. Rather than a conventional follow-up, Amos revisits material written between 2014–2021 and re-records ten Bandcamp-era songs, choosing versions that resonate now instead of assembling a straight “best of.” That curatorial impulse gives the album both intimacy and purpose.

Sonically, Holo Boy strips away some of the lo-fi roughness of the originals and bathes the arrangements in clearer production and steadier performances. The results spotlight Amos’s songwriting — nimble melodic turns, deadpan humor, and a tenderness that has matured since his more experimental turns with Water From Your Eyes. Where early demos felt like private bedroom broadcasts, these renditions open the songs into roomy, tuneful folk-rock and restrained indie-pop.

Highlights land with pleasing directness: “Dreams Away” and “I Can’t Fall” gain emotional heft through cleaner vocal takes and fleshed-out instrumentation, while the revamped “Name the Band” keeps a propulsive, pop-punk bassline that sneaks up on you. A few tracks lose a little of their original quirk when polished, but the trade-off is a cohesive record that reads as a thoughtful portrait of an artist taking stock.

The lyrical world here is modest — small obsessions, self-aware embarrassment, and fleeting sorrow — and Amos’s delivery sells those moments without grandstanding. Holo Boy won’t rewrite expectations set by his work in Water From Your Eyes, but it succeeds as a gentle reintroduction: a tidy, heartfelt collection for newcomers and a rewarding re-framing for longtime listeners. If anything, it confirms Amos’s knack for turning offhand sketches into songs that stick.
