Sleaford Mods’ thirteenth studio album, The Demise of Planet X (released January 16, 2026 on Rough Trade), is another jagged manifesto from the British post-punk duo that refuses to sit still or sound polite. Across 13 tracks, Jason Williamson’s angry, cut-to-the-bone vocal delivery and Andrew Fearn’s spare, machine-like beats confront a world unraveling in real time — where digital overload, political frustration and everyday absurdities feel like constant companions.

The album leans into its concept from the first bizarre laugh that opens “The Good Life,” setting the tone for a record steeped in alienation and critique. Songs like “Elitest G.O.A.T.” and “Megaton” harness propulsive rhythms to satirize social media posturing and cultural decline, while collaborations broaden the duo’s sonic palette. Guest turns from Liam Bailey on “Flood the Zone,” grime MC Snowy on “Kill List,” and Aldous Harding bring unexpected textures to the typically minimalist soundscape.

Critics have generally responded positively, with a Metacritic score around the high 70s, noting that this may be Sleaford Mods’ most ambitious and musically diverse album yet. Many reviews highlight Williamson’s willingness to open up emotionally on tracks like “Gina Was” and praise Fearn’s evolving production, which incorporates everything from drum-and-bass energy to subtle melodic hooks.

That said, the album isn’t universally lauded — some critics feel that the duo occasionally revisit familiar territory without pushing far enough beyond it. Yet fans and reviewers alike agree that The Demise of Planet X captures the corrosive energy of the moment with both wit and ferocity. It’s an album that doesn’t just document societal frustration — it embodies it.
