Hen’s Teeth, released on 27 February 2026, finds Iron & Wine — the long-running project of singer-songwriter Sam Beam — returning with one of his most warmly received albums in years. With a Metacritic critic score of 83, the record has earned universal acclaim, praised for its immersive folk-rock warmth and lyrical depth.

Recorded in Laurel Canyon during the same sessions as 2024’s Light Verse, Hen’s Teeth feels like a complementary sibling — earthier and more tactile, yet rooted in Beam’s mastery of intimate storytelling. Unlike his earlier lo-fi beginnings, these songs are built with a full band of collaborators, including guitarist David Garza, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, and keyboardist Tyler Chester. The Americana trio I’m With Her adds playful harmonies on tracks like “Robin’s Egg” and the tender “Wait Up,” while Beam’s daughter Arden contributes vocals that add a personal and tender texture to songs like “Grace Notes.”

Musically, the album embraces a range of styles within its folk-rooted core — from the gentle sway of “In Your Ocean” to the layered pastoral acoustics of “Defiance, Ohio.” Critics highlight Beam’s ability to create immersive soundscapes that feel like sunlit afternoons or quiet reflective moments, with hushed melodies that unfold gradually and reward repeated listening.

Lyrically, Hen’s Teeth balances introspection and poetic imagery, exploring intimacy, longing, and time’s quiet passage — themes that have long defined Iron & Wine’s work but here feel especially warm and inviting. Overall, the album stands as a rich, nuanced addition to Beam’s catalog, one that showcases his continued evolution as a songwriter and his skill at blending folk tradition with heartfelt innovation.
