Liturgy of Death marks a significant entry in the long, dark legacy of Mayhem, Norway’s most notorious black metal pioneers. Released on 6 February 2026 via Century Media, this seventh studio album finds the band confronting mortality with brutal clarity and ritualistic intensity, cementing its status as one of the most uncompromising forces in extreme metal today.

From the opening strains of “Ephemeral Eternity” — which features guest vocals from Garm of Ulver — the record throws listeners deep into a bleak sonic landscape where icy tremolo guitars and Hellhammer’s merciless drumming set an oppressive tone. Tracks like “Despair” and “Weep for Nothing,” the album’s lead single, combine relentless blast beats with suffocating atmosphere, translating the theme of death not as abstract horror but as an inevitable, almost sacred force.

Critics have generally praised the album’s focus and execution: Metal Hammer and Kerrang! both awarded Liturgy of Death 4/5, applauding its blend of classic black metal fury and eerie atmospheric moments, particularly highlighting Attila Csihar’s chilling vocal performances.  However, not all reactions are uniformly positive. Some reviewers argue that, beyond standout moments like the guest appearance on the opener, the album tends to blend together, with production that is sharper and cleaner than some fans prefer, and riffs that occasionally feel too familiar.

Fan responses mirror this division: long-time listeners appreciate the band’s disciplined execution and thematic depth, while others yearn for more memorable hooks or experimental risks.

Ultimately, Liturgy of Death is a focused, punishing work that doesn’t soften its edges for accessibility. It rewards dedicated fans with ritualistic intensity and atmospheric weight, even if it doesn’t universally redefine Mayhem’s sound.
