Silversun Pickups’ seventh studio album Tenterhooks (released February 6, 2026) finds the Los Angeles alt-rock quartet settling into the sound that has defined their career while subtly stretching its edges. Produced — for the third time — by Butch Vig, the veteran behind Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, the record feels like a cohesive cinematic journey across ten tracks that balance tension with dreamy textures.

From the opening grooves of “New Wave” to the luminous shimmer in “Witness Mark,” the band leans into its strengths: swirling guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and the intertwining vocals of Brian Aubert and Nikki Monninger. There’s a palpable sense of suspense that matches the album’s title — like you’re listening on edge — with songs that ebb and flow between brooding introspection and melodic surges.

That atmospheric quality, while appealing, is a double-edged sword. Critics note that Tenterhooks often resembles one extended composition rather than a collection of distinct highlights, giving the project a cozy familiarity but also a feeling of stasis. Longtime fans might appreciate this consistency, but those hoping for more stylistic evolution could find themselves longing for sharper contrasts or standout moments.

Tracks like “The Wreckage” and “Long Gone” showcase the band’s ability to merge mood with melody — the former’s driving basslines and piano interplay, the latter’s haunting, almost cinematic guitar layers — but even these stops on the album feel more reflective than revolutionary.

In sum, Tenterhooks is a warm, nuanced addition to the Silversun Pickups catalog, rich in texture and emotion. It may not redefine their sound, but it reaffirms their place as torchbearers of dreamy, tension-laden alt-rock.
